Dik Lyndall - speaks out
Dik Lyndall, lead singer - Citizen Fish - Mad Pride at the Garage - here's that speech

Hi folks. This gig is a benefit gig. The Mad Pride thing seems to confuse a lot of people or they're not interested because they have never heard of it before. The cause - cos there has got to be a cause (cause and effect) is basically the treatment of people when they get put in psychiatric units or mental hospitals - all those really scary places no one ever, ever talks about. The reason people get put in there is because the diagnosis is "This person is acting outside the normal boundaries of behaviour - therefore we're going to put them away". Ok? That's step one. Step two is when you're in there, they feed you full of fucking shit - fucked up drugs. They are trying to control your brain patterns.

Most Mad people - their brain patterns have just gone beyond the limit of normality. Right? They've just gone into a sort of dreamworld - it was a bit scary. They've admitted it - that is has got a bit scary - and therefore they've got put away. Because scary shit should not happen in a "reasonable, sane society." Got it? So step two is they fill you full of drugs - which fuck you completely up. Completely.
Step three. They invent something like "Care in the Community" and they put out a lot of people in order to save money on the hospitals. Government money - which is our money in the first fucking place. (Cos that is what Government is all about - raising money off the fucking slaves.) So they put a lot of people out. And then they say that is a good thing cos they are out of the institutions.
Then a couple of these people go and do crimes which are bad news. Cos they are still deranged cos of all the drugs that got pumped into them in the fucking first place.
Then they say well Care in the Community was quite a good idea, but here's another good idea to go along with it. This one's care of Jack Straw. Let's have a programme which says - if you have already been in a psychiatric unit, we can actually for the safety of the public, we can put you back in that unit, even though you haven't done anything. But only because we, the Government, the status quo, the fucking authorities, the powers that be, say that you are liable to cause damage to the pattern of society.
Now liability to do something is not a reason to be put back in these places. It is the thin end of the wedge.
Because once they're saying that, they can say "Well you are likely to go on this riot next week, therefore we are going to think about it. And we think that you have been in this institution before and therefore we are going to put you back in it, just for the safety." Okay that's the way it goes?
That's the way it should not fucking go!
This law is not law yet. But it's gonna be. It's gonna be snuck in amongst a whole bunch of stuff. Are you actually going to do something about it? You can write to your MP perhaps. Have more protests about it perhaps?
In the year 2000 which is coming up soon. Forget the numbers, there should be more events like this, raising money to put on protests and marches. Demonstrations. And it will be called Mad Pride.
In the meantime the benefit gigs they have done so far has lost them money. Buy the fucking tee shirt. Pick up the pamphlet. Get the information. Support anybody who has got a fucking decent cause and this is good.
Here's some music. Hey Ho - Let's go!
